Sleep Regressions: A Phase We’re All Navigating Together
Share
If you’re here, awake in the small hours with a baby who won’t settle, I want you to know: you’re not on your own. I’ve been there..and I’m still there. Some nights feel never-ending, but I promise, this is just a phase..
Sleep regressions happen when babies and toddlers suddenly wake more often, fight naps, or struggle to settle, even if they’d been sleeping well before. It feels like you’ve gone backwards, but it’s actually a sign of growth. Their little bodies and minds are working so hard, learning, changing, adjusting. They tend to appear at 4 months, 8–10 months, 12 months, 18 months, and around 2 years, though every child is different. In my home, the 4-month one felt like a storm, and the 24-month one is already here.
Each time, though, it has passed. What helps? Keeping routines simple and familiar. Offering cuddles and comfort without worrying about “bad habits.” Letting someone else step in when you’re too tired. And most of all-being gentle with yourself.
It is also worth considering the sleep environment for your little one:Is it consistent? Is the temperature too warm or too cold? Has the bedtime routine changed? Is there light peeking through the curtain? (We realised we needed blackout blinds which worked a treat!).
These might seem like small steps, but honestly they make a big difference!! If tonight feels long, hold onto this truth: it won’t always be this way. Your baby will sleep again, and so will you. Until then, you’re doing an incredible job, even if it doesn’t feel like it.You’re not failing, you’re not alone, and this will pass. 🌙💛
